It is important to warm up the interior of the didge, learn to catch the drone (even if only briefly), then use a much gentler “squeezing” circular breathing motion so that you don’t expel too much air too quickly, particularly when catching the pressure again with lung air.

#2016: Very deep birch Didgeridoo in G/G# £180 https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/2016-very-deep-birch-didgeridoo-in-g/ https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/2016-very-deep-birch-didgeridoo-in-g/#respond Sun, 02 Aug 2020 11:30:28 +0000 https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/clone-of-2017-beautiful-birch-didgeridoo-in-bb-180/

The longest and deepest didgeridoo I have made to date! It was a real challenge for me to figure out the technique to play this didge, but once I figured it out, I learned how relaxing and rewarding it can be to play a super-deep stick.

This is absolultely not a beginner's instrument, as it is certainly tricky to get the hang of the circular breathing on such a long didgeridoo.

This long, deep didgeridoo is a lovely instrument. It features a long, gradual, straight taper for most of the length then into a generous bell for the last part. The bell gives it a little more backpressure and volume, and the didge plays really well... once you get the hang of it!

As with all low tones, this is definitely not recommended for beginner players, but more experienced didge players will find it extremely satisfying and rewarding.

How to Play the Didgeridoo https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/how-to-play-the-didgeridoo/ https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/how-to-play-the-didgeridoo/#respond Thu, 16 Jul 2020 13:23:07 +0000 https://barefootdidgeridoos.com/?p=275 Here are a few short lessons to give you the basics of playing the didgeridoo covering: the basic drone, circular breathing, and how to produce a variety of different sounds.

Lesson 1: The Drone

The drone is the natural, fundamental low sound that comes through the didgeridoo and should be the first sound that a beginner tries to get out of the instrument. This short video gives you the basic tips you need to know to play a drone on your didge.

Lesson 2: Circular Breathing

Circular breathing is the term that describes the way a didgeridoo player can play without stopping, keeping the didge vibrating constantly. It is not, as the same might suggest, a magical way of breathing in and out at the same time, but a technique that uses air stored in the cheeks to keep the buzz going while the player takes a sharp in-breath through the nose.

Lesson 3: Different Sounds

A quick introduction to some of the main ways you can make the didgeridoo produce different sounds, including breathing pattern, tongue position, and vocalisation.

This didgeridoo came from a tree in our garden that died after its bark was stripped by goats! I noticed the large bell and decided to cut the tree for a didgeridoo. The result is a very easy playing and versatile D# that would suit anyone from the absolute beginner right up to an advanced player.

Long, deep didgeridoos are not the easiest to play, but they can give a very rewarding, meditative experience. This 2m-long didge is a great example. Played with soft lips it delivers a powerful, rich sound.

The wood is an unknown hardwood, possibly sycamore. It came from the trunk of a long tree I had cut down for another purpose at least a year ago and had been lying seasoning in my garden since then.

The didge took a lot of work to shape and to cut, as I was experimenting with a new cutting method (since abandoned!), so it came out in four separate pieces. The final result is quite special.
